Joseph Delaney Kirkman

TERRE HAUTE — Joseph Delaney Kirkman, 72, of Terre Haute, passed away on Oct. 29, 2012, in the presence of his loving wife Rebecca and his children. He was born June 11, 1940, in Bicknell, the son of late Cecil Estal Kirkman, and survived by his mother, Flossie Marie Kirkman.

He graduated from State High School in 1958, and served in the United States Air Force from 1958-1962. He retired as Chief Executive Officer of First Illinois Credit Union, in Danville, Ill., in 2005.

He also will be remembered for his great passion for music, having been a very talented bass guitarist and vocalist, he played an integral role in local music and entertainment for many years and always enjoyed the opportunity to perform with his many area musician friends. He was inducted into the Wabash Valley Musician’s Hall of Fame of 2000.

He is survived by his wife Rebecca Sue; his three children, daughters, Kimalea Kay Miller of Chatsworth, Ga., and Stephanie Nelson-Muirhead (Mark Chapotel) of New Orleans, La., and son, Larry David Nelson of Danville, Ill.; granddaughter, Jennifer Kay Brashear (Paul Whaley), James Calvin Miller (Tanaya), Jason Dewayne Miller (Amy); great-grandchildren, Macey, Levi, Kathryn and Gage, all of Chatsworth, Ga. Joe also was survived by six siblings; brothers, Cecil (Mary Alice), Charles Robert (Mary), Timothy (Roberta); sisters, Phyllis Roberts (John), Pansy McCrary (Ray), Sharon Waggoner (Keith); a sister–in-law, Dorothy Kirkman. Joe also was survived by numerous nieces and nephews who were all also very special to him.  

Joe was preceded in death by his sister; and brother-in-law, Carol Virginia Craft (Joseph); and brother, Paul Edward Kirkman.

A visitation will be at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive today, Nov. 2, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. to be followed with a memorial service with the Rev. Ray McCrary II officiating and also military honors will be provided. The family requests that for those who desire, donations in his memory may be made to American Stroke Association.
