Fred R. Conrad Jr.

TERRE HAUTE — Fred R. Conrad Jr., of Monticello, Ind., passed away Feb. 10, 2012. Born Dec. 11, 1923, in Bicknell, he was the son of Fred and Hazel Conrad. They preceded him, as well as his sisters, Margaret and Mary Catherine.

Survivors include his daughters, Cheryl (husband- the Rev. Houston Blair Jr.) Conrad of Pittsboro, N.C., and Coleen (Robert) Phillips of Mowequa, Ill.; a son, Greg (Mary) Conrad of Terre Haute; a sister, Bette Dehls of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Larry Conrad of Arizona; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his wife, Ginny (Smith) Conrad of Monticello; and his first wife, Mazie (Ivers) Bollman of Pittsboro, N.C.

Fred was a graduate of Gerstmeyer High School in Terre Haute, and Indiana State University. He played tennis at ISU, and for many years afterwards, and formed a tennis program at the prison in Terre Haute. An English teacher, he taught many years in Effingham, Ill., and retired from teaching in Teutopolis, Ill. In 1970, he was named teacher of the year in Effingham. There he was a co-founder of FACE, a local theater group. Fred also was an accomplished pianist. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps.

The family will receive friends on Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, from noon to 1 p.m. EDT at Gardner-Brockman Funeral Home, 505 Main St., in Vincennes. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Houston Blair Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to FACE or the school of your choice.
