Sarah E. Schnurpel

TERRE HAUTE — Sarah E. Schnurpel, 75, of Terre Haute, and formerly of Brazil, passed away at Union Hospital Feb. 8, 2012, following a lengthy illness.

She was born as one of 13 children, on April 6, 1936, in Brazil, Ind. the daughter of Edward Lee and Ethel (Crabb) McKinney. Sarah attended Bee Ridge School and married Russell Eugene Schnurpel Sr. Dec. 23, 1950. Sarah devoted her life to raising her family. She was a wonderful cook and a talented poet. She used music to teach her family “life lessons”. She and her husband Russell loved traveling having spent time in California and New Mexico. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Ethel McKinney; husband, Russell Schnurpel; siblings: Helen Smith, Beatrice “Minnie” McKinney, Helen Louise Craig, James, Robert, Carl, Harry and Johnny McKinney, Anna Mary Dickison and Clifford McKinney, sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Schnurpel and Shirley Schnurpel; special brother-in-law, Kenneth Balding.

Sarah is survived by her five children: Russell Schnurpel Jr. of Terre Haute, Janet Schnurpel Recknor, Charles Schnurpel and wife Marty of Arizona, Rhonda White and husband Chris of Missouri and Larry Schnurpel and wife Sonya of Alabama; 14 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Maudie Dickison; a brother, George McKinney; brothers-in-law, Charles Schnurpel and wife Carol and James Schnurpel and wife Jan; sister-in-law, Barbara (Gerber) Schnurpel; special sister, Jackie Balding and her family as well as a large extended family.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave. Brazil, IN 47834. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
