  UPDATE 4: Deadly tornado roars through Oklahoma City suburb

  A monstrous tornado at least a half-mile wide roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods and destroying an elementary school with a direct blow as children and teachers huddled against winds up to 200 mph. At least 51 people were killed, and officials said the death toll was expected to rise.

Betty Hires

TERRE HAUTE — Betty Hires, 88, of Terre Haute, passed away at 12:25 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, in Royal Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Terre Haute. She was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Vigo County, to Jasper Lowe and Bessie Hudson Lowe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hires. Survivors include three sons, Bill Hires, Rex Hires, and Tex Hires; two daughters, Lee Ann Hires and Eva Thomas; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

According to her wishes cremation has been scheduled with burial of her ashes in Bethesda Memorial Park.
