Carol Ann Marvel Eslinger

Carol Ann Marvel Eslinger, 73, died unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, of a cerebral aneurysm in Valley Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nev. She had just returned from Honolulu, Hawaii, with her husband, where they were celebrating their 50th anniversary.

She was born Nov. 13, 1939, in Hollywood, Calif., to Darrell F. Marvel and Margaret Brake Marvel. She graduated from Wiley High School, where she was a majorette and participated in Girls Athletic Association. She then attended Indiana State University, later working at National Cash Register and Cruft Grade School as a secretary. She was co-owner of Maurizio’s Pizza of Terre Haute from its inception in 1972 until her death. She served as treasurer, secretary and bookkeeper for that business. Her energy and moxie were major contributors to the success of Maurizio’s Pizza over the last four decades.

She married James A. Eslinger on Jan. 30, 1963, at Montrose Methodist Church, and he survives. Also surviving are her sons, James D. Eslinger and Eric K. Eslinger, as well as grandson, Cameron James Eslinger. Also surviving are sisters, Marcia K. Myers and Mary Lynn Marvel; brother-in-law, Dr. Ken Eslinger and his wife, Denise; niece, Margaret F. Myers; nephews, Bert R. Myers and Paul D. Myers; and cousins, Edward Marvel and Jon Marvel.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents.

She had been a member of the sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, serving in various offices in that organization. She had been secretary for Lost Creek Elementary School’s PTO. She worked the polls as a clerk in numerous elections in Precinct E of Lost Creek Township.

She was an extremely skilled typist whose employment supported her husband as he completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Indiana State University, University of Florida and Pitzer College, in Claremont, Calif.

At work she managed and directed the kitchen and deliveries, coordinating a myriad of forces to create, cook and distribute the orders. She expected no more effort from her employees than she herself was willing to put forth.

She had a zest for life that was hard to contain. These are some of her favorite things: flashy convertibles, sitting in the sun on the beach, playing slot machines and helping relatives redecorate the interiors of their homes. She loved traveling and took trips with her family to Florida, California, Washington, New York City, Quebec, and most recently to Waikiki Beach, Hawaii, where she celebrated 50 years of marriage. She was an elegant, vivacious and gracious lady who will be remembered as a skilled chef of the sumptuous Sunday dinners enjoyed by her relatives and friends. She certainly will be sorely missed for the thousands of ways she showed her love for her family.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. today at Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with funeral services at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make a contribution to the local humane society, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, TREES, Inc., or any local charity supporting the needy. Online condolences can be made at:
