  UPDATE 4: Deadly tornado roars through Oklahoma City suburb

  A monstrous tornado at least a half-mile wide roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods and destroying an elementary school with a direct blow as children and teachers huddled against winds up to 200 mph. At least 51 people were killed, and officials said the death toll was expected to rise.

Kathryn ‘Katie’ Helmick Gifford

TERRE HAUTE — Kathryn “Katie” Helmick Gifford, 92, of Terre Haute, passed away at 6:21 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013. She was born Sept. 15, 1920, in Perth, to Orville and Bertha Grayless. Katie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a volunteer for Foster Grandparents, was a member of Jolly Kitchen Band, and loved to play bingo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, sisters and brothers.

Katie is survived by a son, James A. Helmick and his wife Rebecca J. of Terre Haute; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Roselawn Funeral Home, with visitation Tuesday from 11 a.m. until services. Officiating will be Friar John Bamman. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Online condolences can be made at:
