Stanley William Corthum

TERRE HAUTE — Stanley William Corthum ended his journey on earth Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, to be with God in Heaven. He was born to Margaret Daves Corthum and Millard Corthum, in Terre Haute, on May 3, 1928.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Marian Ruth Claypool Corthum, who passed away in 2007. He is survived by one daughter, Carol Briggs and her husband Phil of Terre Haute; two grandsons, Eric McManaway of Brazil and Joshua Briggs of Terre Haute; nephew, Mike Corthum of North Carolina; special friends, Robert Bell of Terre Haute, Bill McClain of West Terre Haute, and Deborah Bennett Lee of Terre Haute, who was like a second daughter, Virginia Perkins, the Tracey Family, Kathy Pierce, and many church friends from the West Terre Haute Assembly of God Church, where he was a member, and his faithful dog, Rusty. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth Corthum; a grandson, Phillip Wesley Briggs; and a nephew, Ronnie Corthum.

He retired from McMillan Sporting Goods, where he worked as a sales manager for 33 years. During his lifetime, he went on many fishing trips to Canada, Minnesota, as well as fishing all around this area at strip pits and lakes as he was an avid fisherman and had also participated in many bass tournaments. In his younger years he played the saxophone with a dance band called “The Melody Kings”. He was inducted into the Wabash Valley Musicians Hall of Fame. He also often played his saxophone at the nursing home until about two years ago. He was a third degree Mason, a member of the Gideons, and played in West Terre Haute Assembly of God Orchestra. He and the church orchestra band volunteered at nursing homes and other churches. Since 2007, he has been a resident of the Kindred Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Terre Haute. One year he was elected King of the nursing home. He was known for his sweet smile and dimples and was loved by the nursing home staff and the staff from Vista Care Hospice who helped with his care.

Funeral services for Stanley will be 2 p.m. (EST) Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute, with the Revs. Rick May and Randy Smith officiating. Burial will be in Clarksville (Ill.) Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and prior to services Saturday. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vista Care Hospice with envelopes available in the funeral home. The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff of Kindred Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center and the Ladies Group from Memorial United Methodist who visited him at the nursing home.
