John A. Detzel

John A. Detzel, 88, of Terre Haute, formerly of Brazil, died Jan. 30, 2013, at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born Aug. 24, 1924, to Clyde and Aretha Latham Detzel. He graduated from Brazil High School in 1942.

John

served in the U.S. Army Military Police Unit, seeing combat in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, and also in Belgium before his final overseas assignment at the Nuremberg Trials in Germany. He was honorably discharged at the rank of sergeant.

On April 23, 1948, he was united in marriage to Charlotte Stoner Detzel.

In 1948, John began working for Public Service Indiana (Duke Energy), serving as district superintendent and district manager, before retiring as assistant vice president of the western division in 1986.

John and Charlotte enjoyed their retirement years traveling around the country and spending their summers in Billings, Mont. John was never content to sit still, always finding a project to stay busy.

At the age of 78, John bought his first computer, and after learning the basics, embarked on a three-year research project tracking his family ancestry.

In the past, John was a member of the American Legion Clay County Post 2, serving as adjutant and commander, Brazil Elks Lodge and the Knightsville Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Clyde Detzel of Brazil.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Detzel of Terre Haute; son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Janet Detzel, of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Allison Wright, Wendy Wilson and Jay Sharpe; great-grandchildren, Amelia and Eloise Wright, Ellie and Shelby Wilson, and Thomas Sharpe; sister, Virginia Detzel Mathis; nieces, Carol and Gayle Weaver; and nephew, David and Gerty Mathis.

At his request, cremation will take place with no services to be held. If friends so desire, donations in his name may be made to the Clay County Humane Shelter and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
