Violet Jeffers Mahurin, 91, of Terre Haute passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2013 in Davis Gardens Health Center, where she had been a resident for the past 4 1/2 years. She was born January 11, 1922, to Edgar Jeffers and Bonnie Maynard Jeffers. She lived most of her childhood in the Riley, IN, and Hymera, IN, areas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Geneva Marlow, and her loving husband of 70 years Carl Mahurin. Violet and Carl were the parents of three children, all still living. They are Deanna Kay Russell and husband John of Mexico Beach, Florida, Carl Michael Mahurin of Terre Haute and Rita Jean Youngblood also of Terre Haute. Violet was the grandmother to five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Violet was active in the lives of her children and the community and was a role model for her family as a caring, thoughtful and loving mother. She enjoyed traveling and after Carl’s retirement, she and Carl spent the winter months in their home in Winter Haven, Florida. Prior to that they traveled the United States, as well as several trips abroad. She enjoyed collecting antiques for their homes in Terre Haute and Florida. Violet was also an avid basketball fan for both college and professional teams. A visit with Violet in her younger years always included a conversation about sports. Violet will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, January 24, 2013, in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Pastor Kyle Andrews officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2013. Funeral information is also available at: www.callahanandhughes.com
