  UPDATE 4: Deadly tornado roars through Oklahoma City suburb

  A monstrous tornado at least a half-mile wide roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods and destroying an elementary school with a direct blow as children and teachers huddled against winds up to 200 mph. At least 51 people were killed, and officials said the death toll was expected to rise.

Mary Kathryn Gilbert

SHELBURN — Mary Kathryn Gilbert, 93, of Shelburn, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, in Miller’s Merry Manor. She was born on Sept. 26, 1919, to Thomas and Marie Theresa “Mayme” Laurent Nash.

Mary was a graduate of Shelburn High School, and had worked at Shelburn Bank, Starks Drug Store, and United States Post Office. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Shelburn American Legion Post Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Franklin Gilbert, on April 5, 2010; her sons: Bradley Neil Gilbert, infant, Christopher Gilbert on Aug. 5, 2009, and Neil Gilbert on Jan. 11, 2013.

Survivors include her son, Mark (Deb) Gilbert of Sullivan; her daughter, Mindy Gilbert of Shelburn; a brother, Jim Nash of Gering, Neb.; a sister, Loretta Sajko of Arizona; four grandchildren, Lindsay Hunter, Meredith Gilbert, Ian Gilbert, and Jordan Gilbert; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services for Mary will be 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, in St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Frank Renner officiating. Visitation will be in Holmes Memorial Chapel, in Sullivan, on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. with prayer service at 7 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the church or the Chris Gilbert Memorial Scholarship Fund, through the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
