Mary Lou Archer, 90, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, in her residence surrounded by her family.
She was a registered nurse, having begun her career as a graduate of the St. Anthony School of Nursing Class of 1944 and continuing to work at St. Anthony’s Hospital for many years. She retired from Terre Haute Regional Hospital in January 1987, after 23 years of service. She was born May 24, 1922 in Sugar Creek Township in Vigo County, to Lewis McCoy Carson and Muriel Elizabeth Payton Carson.
Mary Lou was a graduate of Concannon High School Class of 1940. She became a member of the First Baptist Church of West Terre Haute in 1933. She played the piano there for over 40 years and also sang in the choir during special events. She taught and directed the Dailey Vacation Bible School and worked in child evangelism. She was also a member of the Terre Haute Symphony Chorus, a member of the Vigo County Extension Homemakers Club since 1987, where she also sang in the chorus for several years, a member of the Sugar Grove Home Extension Club, where she was a member of the Past Presidents Club. She was also active in the Christian Women’s Club for several years, as well as a member of the Nightingale’s Association, the Good Cheer Club, and the Antique and Classic Car Club.
Survivors include her husband, Abel L. Archer, whom she married on Nov. 28, 1946, in the First Baptist Church of West Terre Haute; a daughter, Muriel Ruth Ridener and her husband, Allan of Terre Haute; a son-in-law, Charles Bailey of Terre Haute; three grandchildren, Andrew Bailey and his wife, Valerie of Burlington, Ky., Elizabeth Randolph and her husband, Brennan of Terre Haute, and Mary Ann Stewart and her husband, Mike of Terre Haute; four great-grandchildren, Caleb, Whitney, Madison and Aidan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Mary Lee Bailey; two sisters, Phyllis Carson and Joyce Clay; and two brothers, Jesse Carson and Bill Carson.
Funeral services for Mary Lou will be 1 p.m. Monday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, with Pastor Jeff Augustus officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. until service time Monday.
