TERRE HAUTE —
July 4, 1924 – Jan. 6, 2013
We celebrate the life of Joseph P. Yaraschefski, 88, of Terre Haute, who passed away on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013. Joe was retired from Alcan after 30 years of service as a machinist. He was born July 4, 1924, in Terre Haute, to Marion and Annastasia Yaraschefski.
He is survived by sons, Mike Yaraschefski of Riley, and Tom Yaraschefski and wife Jane of Corey; daughters, Patty Malone and Sue Yaraschefski of Terre Haute. Grandfather to Eli and Kelsey Malone, Hanna Burch, Matthew Clark and Joe Yaraschefski. Great-grandfather to Kali Mareie Kerr. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife of 54 years, Norma Yaraschefski, who passed away in 2007; his brother, Alex Yaraschefski; and sisters, Nettie Meer, Helen Ozok and Estelle Slesicki.
Joe was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II and the Korean War. He was an avid deer hunter. He has inspired many young people including his granddaughter, Hanna Burch and friend Nathon Hall of Terre Haute. He also has inspired many others to the love of the woods and deer hunting. This was his passion! Joe was featured in the Tribune-Star in 2004, in an article titled “Veteran Hunter Still Going Strong at 80.” He was known best for setting up his sons Mike and Tom and fellow hunters in the best spots for the “trophy bucks” while he took the less desirable areas. He greatly influenced and was hunting partners with his sons Mike and Tom, as well as his nephews, Steve and Jim Yaraschefski of Indianapolis, Joe Rehmel of Fairbanks, and Gary Gordon of Terre Haute. With his skilled hands as a machinist he often fabricated his own portable and climbing tree stands for his sons and others.
We are all very saddened by the loss of our father but find comfort that he lived a long and happy life right up to the end, recently hunting with his sons. We also find great comfort knowing he’s in Heaven with our Mom and his family. We imagine he has already scouted the woods for future hunts! We would like to thank pallbearers, Joe Rehmel, Steve Yaraschefski, Jim Yaraschefski, Jim Fitzgerald, Snooks Malone and Doug Fisher.
Visitation is at Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, located at 2425 Wabash Ave., on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with services starting at 1 p.m., with Pastor Jim Clayton officiating. Immediately following the services we invite you to join us at Oak Hill Cemetery, Indiana 46, for military honors provided by Lawton-Byrum Post 972 Veterans of Foreign Wars, to honor our Dad. Special thanks to Debbie Laswell for providing flower arrangements, and several other family members and friends who have provided food, love, prayers and support, and thanks to Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home for their comfort and services.
