CLINTON — James “Melvin” Curry, 75, of Clinton, died 11:49 EST Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at Union Hospital Clinton. Born July 29, 1937, in Clinton, he was the son of Oral and Christine Curry.
He retired in 1980 after 24 years of service in the U.S. Navy as Avionics Master Chief. His duties included: flight electrician with VW-11, where he accumulated over 2,000 flying hours and was part of Crew 13 which flew the 10,000th North Atlantic Barrier Patrol from Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada; supervisor for SACE/VAST electronic maintenance for Atlantic Fleet E2A/B/C aircraft at AIMD Norfolk, Va. (1970/74) and carriers USS Forrestal CVA 59 (1967-70) and USS Saratoga CVA 60 (1974-77) while serving with VAW-123; also served as Command Master Chief/Senior Enlisted Advisor of VAW-123 (1977) and Atlantic Fleet CAEWWing 12 (1977-80). Other duty stations were Bainbridge, Md., Chincoteague, Va., Norman, Okla., Jacksonville, Fla., Sanford, Fla., San Diego, Calif., Iceland, and Vietnam aboard USS Forrestal in 1967.
He worked as an instrument technician at Eli Lilly Clinton Labs (1982/2000), where he performed maintenance and calibration on electronic equipment in support of a solid and four liquid waste burners, three stream monitors and environmental controls lab. He also was a certified test equipment calibration technician and was responsible for the entire plant calibration program.
He was preceded in death by his Mom, Dad and brother, Raymond.
He married Lillian Long of Carbonear, Newfoundland, in 1961, and she survives him. He also is survived by sons, Michael and his wife Monica of Norfolk, Va.; Marvin and partner Kathy of Streator, Ill.; Forrest and his wife Candy of Cary, Ill.; granddaughters, Ladonna and her husband Jeffrey Gonzalez, and Ashley; grandson, James Curry and partner Melissa Crawford; a stepson, Justin Frank and wife Jane; three great-granddaughters, Hana, Madilynn and Christina; one great-grandson, Anthony James; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Alexis; three stepgreat-grandsons, Hayden, Kyle, and Jaiden; sister, Oralene Killebrew and her husband Nolan; a sister-in-law, Faye Curry; nephews, Robert Johnson, Paul Killebrew, Keith Curry, Keith Cox, and Luke Dickerson; nieces, Rebecca Hatheway, Rachael Killebrew, Christie Daniels, and Jane Compton; cousins, Francis Curry, Frances Leder, Sharon Vorek, DeAnne Bennett, Donnetta Mosier, Norma Wallace, and Paul Curry.
Services will be held 12 noon Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Giovanini Funeral Home, 408 Vine St., in Clinton, with the Rev. Wendy Olsen officiating. Burial will be in Spangler Cemetery with military graveside services. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fleet Reserve Association.
