Barbara Kay Berg

FARMERSBURG — Barbara Kay Berg, amazing daughter, mother, teacher, and grandmother, left us all too soon. Born in Oklahoma City, on April 1, 1945, Barbara spent most of her childhood in Woodriver, Ill., and graduated from Roxana High School. She made lifelong friends during her two years at Cottey College, and then met her future husband, James Berg, as she finished her degree in chemistry at Iowa State University.

Barbara worked for Ciba Pharmaceutical in New Jersey prior to marrying James and joining him in Maryland for one year before settling in Evansville, Ind., for 27 years. There she raised their three children, and taught chemistry, physics, math, and general science at Central High School for 13 years. In 1997 a move to Spotswood, N.J. took her talents to Woodbridge Colonia High School for her final six years of teaching.

Barbara and James settled into retirement in Farmersburg, where she passionately promoted her love of education as a P.E.O. state representative for Cottey College. She was an active member and president of P.E.O. and Terre Haute New Comers club and enjoyed participating in the Farmersburg Festival committee each year. She traveled often to visit family and with friends. It has been a life well lived.

Barbara was preceded in death by her sister, Kathy (Wheeler) Perkins. She is survived by her parents, Robert and Betty Wheeler; husband, James Berg; children, Richard (Eula Anna) Berg, Tara (Bryan) Pederson, and Daniel Berg; and grandchildren, Palmer and Paul Pederson and Bergon and Nekkia Roach-Conwell; brother, Steven Wheeler; sister, Martha (Steven) Miller; and three nieces, Cassie and Helen Wheeler and Audra Perkins.

A memorial service will be held at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E Springhill Drive, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in her memory to Cottey College Alumnae Challenge, 1000 W Austin BLVD RM G25, Nevada MO 64772. Per her wishes she will be cremated.
