TERRE HAUTE —
Kirsten Lise Stewart, faithful servant of God, was called from this life on November 12, 2012. Kirsten was born January 26, 1970, in Terre Haute, and at 16 years old, began a long but courageous battle against the effects of spinal cord cancer. Her physical limitations did not stop her from living her life to the fullest and devoting herself to helping and giving to others in need.
Kirsten was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Terre Haute where she was baptized and confirmed. After high school at Terre Haute North Vigo, Kirsten graduated from Indiana State University in 1993 with degrees in early childhood development and elementary education. She was a member of Mortar Board Society and Alpha Omicron Pi. She enjoyed writing for children, and one of her short stories was published in 2000. Her work was later used for standardized elementary education testing in two states.
Kirsten is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Otto and Pauline Braunschweiger of Terre Haute, and by her paternal grandparents, Charles Stewart and Alvena Stewart Downing of Brazil.
She is survived by her parents, James Robert Stewart and Marsha Braunschweiger Stewart, of Terre Haute, her sister, Michele Stewart Brice, and brother-in-law, Charles E. Brice, Jr. and nephew, Christian N. Brice, of Windermere, Florida, her aunts Kathyln Dinkel Taylor, Linda Downing Grove, uncle Stephen Downing, baptismal sponsors Roger Smiley and Jan Bilyeu Swingley and her very special great aunt and uncle, Tom and Dorothy Bilyeu, as well as numerous cousins and faithful, dear friends and caregivers, Tammy Sims, LeeAnn Terril and Karina Wallace and Dr. Grace Walker who provided unfailing support and care.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2012 in Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church officiated by Reverend Jacob Sutton. There will be a visitation preceding the service at 1:30 p.m. in the narthex. A Christian burial will follow the service at Highland Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street. Pallbearers are Jeffrey J. Schultz, Joshua J. Schultz, Grant Ingram, Richard White, Larry Taylor and James McMullen. In lieu of flowers, Kirsten would have appreciated donations to Immanuel Lutheran Church or VNA Hospice of the Wabash Valley.
Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
