George William Brodie

TERRE HAUTE — George William Brodie, 99, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, in Terre Haute. He was born Nov. 1, 1913, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Harry and Gussie Brodie.

George was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Evelyn and Florence and their husbands. He is survived by his daughters, Anne Mandel (Norman) of Atlanta, and Janis Brodie of New York; his son, James Brodie (Melanie) of Terre Haute; and many grandchildren, including Craig Brodie of Indianapolis, and Derek Davis (Nicole) of Terre Haute.

George was retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve as a chief petty officer, serving 32 years total, with 10 years of active duty. Eight years of his service time were spent as part of the local Marine Corps Reserve detachment. He joined the Navy in 1937 and was on active duty when Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941. He served at many duty stations across the country, including Great Lakes Training Center, Horn Island Army Base in Mississippi, Brooklyn Navy Yard, and San Diego Naval Base. He started his career with the Navy in the engineering department as a fireman and was on board many old ships including the U.S.S. Texas and some that pre-dated World War I. Later, he transferred to the Medical Corps, which gave him the opportunity to train with Marines for Jungle Warfare early in World War II. George was part of the original crew of the Destroyer Escort, U.S.S. Fiske D.E. 143 when  it was  commissioned in San Diego. The Fiske saw action guarding convoys and Flagships including Aircraft Carriers and Cruisers, and made many trips to Africa, Panama and Cuba. On the DE Fiske’s last action on Aug. 2, 1944, the Fiske was torpedoed by a German Submarine while pursuing another German ship. The survivors from the Fiske were in the water off of Newfoundland for approximately four hours before being rescued. His training included Medical Corps and Laboratory schools. He worked on various projects for the military involving Bacterial warfare. Upon leaving active duty in 1947, George pursued a career in the construction business while still involved in the Naval Reserve. After retirement he worked as a volunteer for many organizations, helping senior citizens and ex-military personnel. Being active in many organizations including the Disabled American Veterans, of which he was a past Commander of the local chapter; local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars chapters were a big part of his life and he held many offices over the years. He also was proud to be a member of The Fleet Reserve, military retirees, and various sailor’s organizations. He was a life member of many veteran’s organizations. He was also a past member of Toastmasters, The Optimists and Izaak Walton League. Until well in to his 80s, George enjoyed swimming and pursued this passion several times a week. He also loved reading, history and working in his yard.

In honor of George's wishes, cremation was chosen with no formal services. A private celebration of life ceremony will be held for relatives and close friends at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to a veteran’s organization of your choice in George’s name. Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th St., in Terre Haute, was entrusted with arrangements.
