TERRE HAUTE — Betty Jane Francis Dickerson, 88, of Terre Haute, passed away at her residence on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was born in Prairieton on May 24, 1924, to Frank and Helen Smith Francis, and was a 1942 graduate of Honey Creek High School. Soon after graduation she moved to Chicago where she was employed with Commercial Motor Freight. She returned to Terre Haute after marrying her husband, Bud Dickerson, on Jan. 10, 1948. She retired from the Tribune Star Publishing Company in 1992, after many years as a motor route carrier.

She was an avid flower gardener and had done floral arrangements for many special occasions. She was a very creative lady who enjoyed sewing and embroidery work. She was known for her fabulous cooking. She was a strong supporter of all local teams, loved Indiana State University, Indiana University, and Purdue University sports, the Indiana Pacers and NCAA basketball tournaments and Olympic figure skating.

Her survivors are two sons, Steven Dickerson and wife Gayle of Louisville, Ky., and Tom Dickerson of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two daughters, Kathy Dickerson, and Patricia Halloran and husband Bernard, all of Terre Haute. Also close to Betty and the family, “adopted” daughter, Jeanne Lorenzo. She has one sister, Lois Morgan Zukunft and husband Carl; a brother-in-law Warren “Junior” Hays; grandchildren, Mya Barnes, Kellen Barnes, Morgan Dickerson, Hannah Dickerson, Cole Dickerson, Tyson Hatzl and husband Greg, Dylan Sinn, Jurgen Sinn, Bailey Halloran and Payton Halloran; three great-grandchildren, Jake, Evan and Luke Hatzl; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Her husband, Lawrence A. “Bud” Dickerson, preceded her in death on March 5, 2005. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lou Hays; brothers, William Francis, Robert Francis and wife Edith, Charles “Chid” Francis and wife Della, and Joe Francis and wife Harriet; and a great-great-grandson, Grant Hatzl.

Funeral services will be 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Kenneth Coffman officiating. Friends may call from 2 p.m. Sunday until service time. Following cremation her burial will be private in the Prairieton Cemetery. The family wishes to make a special thank you to Vibrant Home Health Care. Online condolences may be offered at:
