TERRE HAUTE —
Chester Montel Salyers, 86, of Terre Haute, formerly of Bowling Green, and Patricksburg, Ind., passed away at Union Hospital, Sunday, June 3, 2012, following an extended illness.
Chester was born in Monticello, Ill., Aug. 23, 1925, the son of Samuel and Bonnie (Jones) Salyers. He graduated from Maxwell High School with the class of 1944. Following high school, he joined the United States Army and served for two years, during World War II, prior to being honorably discharged in 1946. Chester was a farmer and was self-employed as a truck driver for most of his life. He also worked at Western Electric in Indianapolis and Rostone in Spencer. He retired from the trucking business in 1985.
Chester married Mary Ellen Jackson Dec. 12, 1948.
Chester was a member of the American Legion, Patricksburg Volunteer Fire Department, Owen County Soil and Water Conservation, and the United Methodist Church of Patricksburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Bonnie Salyers; his daughter, Vicki Lynn Freeman; and brothers, Gerald A. Salyers and Samuel Salyers Jr.
Chester is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Salyers; daughter, Randy Sue Burger (Larry) of Pittsboro; sons, Mark Alan Salyers (Karen) of Terre Haute, Carl Hardy Salyers (Susie Knust) of Ellettsville; grandchildren, Kevin R. Burger, Tamara M. Marion, Cheryl L. Salyers, James M. Salyers, Carissa R. Luking, Zachary N. Freeman, and Lyndsey N. Salyers; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Burger, Abigail Burger, Matthew Marion, Megan Marion, Michaela Marion, Alex Smith, Karrina Smith, Kinleigh Salyers, Carter Salyers, Jacob Salyers, Eli Luking, Adra Luking, and Tyler Luking; sisters, Wanda Fava, Cheryl Cannon, Rosemary Ostermeyer, Joyce Burnham, and Judith Huber; brother, Robert Salyers; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Services will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, in Clay City, Friday, June 8, 2012, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Brett Eaton. Burial will follow at St. Peters Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 50 E. 91st.
