William H. Roberts III

TERRE HAUTE — William H. “Bill” Roberts III, 96, of rural West Terre Haute, died peacefully in the presence of his children, on Dec. 13, 2012. He was born in Terre Haute, on Dec. 6, 1916, to William H. “Pete” Roberts and Pansy Ruth Miller Roberts.

He attended local public schools, graduating from the former Wiley High School, in 1934. He was a World War II veteran, serving in Army Ordnance in the European Theater of Operations. At the time of his discharge, he was a captain. With the exception of his time spent in the military, Mr. Roberts spent his working life in the contracting business in Terre Haute.

He married Laverne “Bernie” Frances Beeson, on Jan. 1, 1948. She preceded him in death after 57 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his children and their spouses: Craige Roberts (B. Chandrasekaran), of Columbus, Ohio; Peter Roberts (Chris) of Eugene, Ore.; and Hank Roberts (Jane) of Ithaca, N.Y.; grandchildren: Mike Roberts (Janet), of Greensboro, N.C., John and Eric Roberts of Eugene, Ore.; Jake (Lauren), Mary, Will and Lucia Roberts of Ithaca, N.Y.; and Laura Bush (Ryan) of Lafayette, Ind.; great-grandchildren: Paxton and Ronin Roberts, of Greensboro, N.C.; Miles Roberts, of Ithaca, N.Y.; and Calvin and Blaine Bush, of Lafayette, Ind.; nieces: Ahn Bowman Bradley and Julia Bowman Martin, of Johnson City, Tenn.; and Marilyn Bowman of Hampton, Va.; nephew Bo Bradley, of Johnson City, Tenn.; and his beloved cousin Jane McCauley, of Avon, Ind.

There will be a memorial service and internment in Terre Haute this coming summer. The family requests that those wishing to honor Bill’s memory do so by making a donation to their local Hospice.
