Walton Eugene Blackwell

Walton Eugene Blackwell, 84, formerly of Terre Haute, died at 3:58 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at IU Arnett Health, in Lafayette. He was born Feb. 24, 1928, in Bradley County, Ark., to the late Walter A. and Effie Baker Blackwell. His marriage was to Lois I. Hoke on Sept. 26, 1950, she passed away on Sept. 24, 2009.

Surviving is a daughter, Vicki Schmidt and husband Thomas of West Lafayette; a son, Gene R. Blackwell of Unionville; three grandchildren, Jesse and wife Melissa, Tiffani and Chris; and a great-grandson, Landen Schmidt. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Ann; and two sisters, Clara Wright and Hilie Morgan.

He attended public schools in Bradley County, where he joined the Army Air Force. He attended Radio School at Scott Field, Ill., and upon completion he was shipped to the South Pacific where he served with the 338th Recognizance Squad (VLR) Mapping 20th AF. He was later transferred to Manila, Philippines, where he was Trick Chief for 14th Command Squad 13th AF in the Radio-Teletype Section. Upon the return to stateside, he was transferred to Biggs AF Base, El Paso, Texas, 8th AF. He was discharged April 25, 1949.

He was employed at Hampton Hardware, in Hampton, Ark., before returning to the Air Force in October of 1950, where he was stationed at Wright-Patterson AF Base in Dayton, Ohio. While stationed there he was NCOIC in the weather department Base Operation. After discharge in October 1951, he was employed by American Can Co., in Terre Haute. Then in 1958 he was employed by Indiana Gas and Chemical Corp. for 21 years. He then traveled with the National Artist and Crafts touring the Southwest, Midwest, and Northeast United States. After retirement he spent his summers in Indiana and winters in Texas.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Roselawn Memorial Park, 7500 N. Clinton St. A military service will follow.
