Dorothy Bays Milanovich (neé Whitehead)

TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy Bays Milanovich died on Wednesday, August 1st, in Indianapolis, at the age of 96. She was born Dorothy Whitehead on January 7, 1916, near Brazil, Indiana.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Nick Milanovich of Clinton, also by her first husband, Mervin G. Bays of Terre Haute. Dorothy’s oldest daughter, Barbara Shores, passed away in 2010. Surviving are Dorothy’s other five children and their families; Sharon Murley and David Schum of Indianapolis; Mary Jane and Brian Bruce of Orlando, Florida; Gary Bays and Kara Hoffman Bays of Hollywood, Florida; Randal Bays and Susan Waters of Seattle, Washington; and Paul Bays of Indianapolis.  Also surviving are grandchildren, Kathy Henry, Michael Miller, Richard Shores, Terri Shores, Cary Albin, Jamie Bays, William Bays, Owen Bays and great-grandchildren Aaron Henry, Evan Henry, Mikayla Miller and Karisa Miller.

Dorothy’s parents, Frank and Anna Whitehead, were farming people from the Brazil area, who resettled near Prairieton in the 1920s and eventually came to live in Terre Haute. Dorothy had four siblings, Lucille, Oliver (Buster), Gertrude and Lorraine. In 1935 she married Mervin G. Bays of Terre Haute. Dorothy and Mervin lived on South Jefferson Street in Terre Haute for many years, raising their six children there. Several years after Mervin’s death in 1970 Dorothy remarried, to Nick Milanovich of Clinton, where they lived until Nick’s death in 1995. Dorothy then relocated to the home of her son Paul Bays in Indianapolis, living there until her death.

Her family and friends will always remember her sweet smile and kind heart, her love and concern for those around her, her sharp mind and her sense of humor, all of which she retained to the very end of her life.

Funeral services are scheduled on Friday, August 10, 2012, in DeBaun Springhill Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. with family members speaking. Calling is from Noon until service time. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery. For those who choose, memorial contributions can be made to your local humane society.
