James E. Abbinett, 64, of Las Vegas, Nev., and formerly of Terre Haute, passed away on Nov. 28, 2012, in his home with his loving wife and daughter by his side, after a six year courageous battle with cancer. Jim was born on March 18, 1948, in Terre Haute, to Bette Lee Wells Abbinett and Albert E. Abbinett Jr.
Jim was a graduate of Indiana State University, where he earned a B.S. and M.S. in Industrial Management. While at ISU he, along with David Gibbs and Stan Ritzert, co-founded the ISU Student Chapter of the Society for Manufacturing Engineers and Jim served as its first president. Jim spent over 25 years in manufacturing management. He worked at CBS on Fruitridge, where he met Karyn. He then worked for his father-in-law at Leisure Manufactured Homes for a few years, then opened up a second location which he owned and operated with his brother-in-law Allen Lindley for 10 years. Jim retired from Merrillat Industries in Las Vegas.
Jim served in the U.S. Army, Active Duty, Army Reserve and Indiana National Guard for a combined total of 13 years. In the National Guard, he reached the rank of Captain and commanded Company "A" of the Terre Haute National Guard on Maple Avenue for three years.
Jim also was on the board of United Way of the Wabash Valley and served as its President from 1982-1983.
Jim married Karyn L. Church (West Terre Haute) on Oct. 3, 1981 and they have lived in Las Vegas, for 19 years.
Jim will always be remembered by his family and friends as a great speaker, a great storyteller and a great practical joker, but most of all a good man who was a devoted husband, loving father, a caring friend, and the best grandpa to his two grandsons. Jim loved hunting, football and always had a “household” project in the works.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Karyn (Church) Abbinett; daughter, J. Marie Harrod (Mike) of Las Vegas; stepsons, William “Joe” Lydick Jr. (Michelle) of West Terre Haute and Scott Lydick (Sarah) of Ooltewah, Tenn.; and two grandsons, Cole Lydick of West Terre Haute and James Harrod of Las Vegas; a sister, Suzanne Lindley (Allen) of Terre Haute; brothers, Jonathon Abbinett of Las Vegas, and Kim Abbinett of Terre Haute; and sister-in-law, Drena Copra (Cody Wilder) of Nashville, Tenn. Jim had many other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews to numerous to mention, but he loved them all.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Jr. and Bette (Abbinett) Garrard; stepfather, Robert L. Garrard DDS; grandparents, James Hoyt and Susan Elizabeth Wells, Albert Abbinett Sr., John and Beulah Harper; in-laws, Walter and Betty Church Jr.; and his beloved Daschund, Niles.
Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at Roselawn Funeral Home. Services will be at 3:30 Saturday at the funeral home. Jim will be laid to rest in Roselawn Memorial Park. Jim would ask, since he is a disabled veteran, that in lieu of flowers, you give a donation to The Wounded Warrior Project at supportwoundedwarriorproject.org. Online condolences may be made at:
