Norma Rose Mattis

MARTINSVILLE, Ill. — Norma Rose Mattis, 84, of rural Martinsville, died on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, after several months of failing health. She was born on April 23, 1928, the daughter of Harry and Mabel (Miller) Willmann, on a farm near Marshall, Ill. She grew up with two beloved sisters, Mrs. Clara Low and Mrs. Helen Wernz. She graduated from Marshall High School and cherished those friendships she made there.

She was a member of Island Grove Baptist Church, the Friendly Neighbors HEA Unit, and a resident of Villas of Holly Brook. She drove a school bus for many years and loved knowing so many students and watching them grow up. She felt blessed in her life, and she enjoyed living on a farm and was ready to do anything for her family and friends. She will be sadly missed by her family, friends, and her dog, Pepper, who has been adopted by residents of the Villas.

She married Marshall Craig Mattis in 1948 and he preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 1999. She also lost her 20-year-old grandson, David Craig Mattis, who died on July 25, 1999.

She is survived by her four children, Donald (Kathy) Mattis of Carrollton, Ill., Richard (Cristy) Mattis of Jerseyville, Ill., Ann (Ray) Emken of rural Flat Rock, Ill., and Steve (Joetta) Mattis of rural West Union. She was a proud grandmother to Karen (Tad) Droste and great-grandson, Sam; Kate (Mike) Pohlman; Jason Mattis: Vicky (Matt) Sowders; Eric (Kendra) Updegraff and great-granddaughters, Sarah and Olivia; Ryan (Amie) Updegraff; Christopher Emken; Matthew (Ann) Mattis and great-granddaughter, Ella; and Kristofer (Courtney) Mattis.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. CST Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Prust-Hosch Funeral Home, in West Union. Burial will be in Ohio Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Island Grove Baptist Church or to the donor’s choice. Memories and condolences may be shared at: www.prust-hosch.com
