Dr. Julie L. Randall McLaughlin

. — BRAZIL — Dr. Julie L. Randall McLaughlin, Ph.D., age 53, of  Brazil, passed away at 4:10 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2010, at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. She was born June 22, 1956, in Cincinnati, the daughter of the Rev. Edward Randall and Barbara Tyler Randall. 

She was Curriculum Coordinator of Math and Science for the Vigo County School Corporation from 2008 to 2010. She had dedicated the past 30 years of her life to education. She taught English and French at Angleton High School in Angleton, Texas, from 1983 – 1992; and moved to North Vigo High School in 1992, to teach English and Journalism until 2000, when she was appointed assistant principal at North High School. She served in that position until 2008, when she moved to the VCSC Administration office in her current position.

At North High School, Dr. McLaughlin served as the sponsor for the AdvancED team, the Polaris yearbook, Continental Crier, National Honor Society, and many Academic teams. She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa International, National Council of Teachers of English, Indiana Association of Secondary Principals, Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, International Reading Association, Indiana Association of School Principals, and the Vigo County Education Foundation.

Dr. McLaughlin received her B.S. in English and Journalism Education from Indiana University. She also held a M.A. in English Specialization; and M.Ed. in School Administration and Supervision; and Ed.S. Educational Specialist; and her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, all from Indiana State University.

She was a graduate of Brazil High School. While in high school and college she was a sports writer for the Brazil Times, and received the National “Big Inch” Award in Journalism for her volume of work published.

She was a member of the Board of Trustees at the First Baptist Church of Terre Haute. She also was an accomplished musician on flute and piano, and had performed in many area churches as a pianist and vocal soloist.

She was preceded in death by her father in 2009.

She is survived by her mother of Terre Haute; sister, Susan Sneddon (T.J.) of Brazil; and a brother, Philip Randall (Margaret) of Bloomington. She also is survived by her nephew, Richard (Sheri) Swearingen of Brazil; niece, Katie Randall of Connecticut; and great-nephews and great-nieces, Ashley Richard Ashton, Chris, and David Swearingen; and Tamera and Cody Swearingen, all of Brazil. Also surviving are her aunts, Joan Zumwalt of Jacksonville, Ark., Hope Jacobs of Jeffersonville, and many caring friends at Terre Haute North High School and the Vigo County School Corporation.

Services will be held Saturday, March 20, 2010, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Terre Haute, with the Revs. Bernie Jackson and Steve Newman officiating. Visitation at the church will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. until time of services on Saturday. Moore Funeral Home, in Brazil, was chosen to provide services.  Pallbearers will be Mick Newport, Brian Mancuso, Rick Swearingen, the Rev. Brent Meyer, Philip Randall, Richard Ashton Swearingen, Chris Swearingen, and David Swearingen.
