TERRE HAUTE — John D. Merritt Sr. (Donald), 87, of Terre Haute, passed away Aug. 29, 2012, at Norton Healthcare Pavilion in Louisville, Ky. He was born March 12, 1925, in Montezuma, Ind., to George T. Merritt and Margaret (Chambers) Merritt.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean. He is survived by his sons, John (Jay) Merritt of Lynchburg Va., and Jerald (Jerry) Merritt (Sandy) of Louisville; daughter, Kathy Merritt of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Jennifer Jordan (Brian) of Nashville, Tenn., and Jeffrey Merritt and Diana Merritt of Louisville; great-grandson, William (Liam) Merritt Jordan of Nashville. He also is survived by his brothers, E. Neil Merritt (Mary Ann) of West Terre Haute and Tommy J. Merritt (Sue) of North Terre Haute; two sisters, Moyne Johnson of Rosedale and June Harris of El Paso, Texas; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He also was preceded in death by his parents and mother, Nema (Wright) Merritt; sister, Kathryn Merritt Cottrell; brother, Kenneth Merritt; and nephews, John Cottrell, Chris Cottrell and John Merritt.

Donald was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Don retired after 35 years of service from the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company in Cleveland. He moved to Terre Haute after his retirement in 1988.

In lieu of burial, Donald’s ashes will be sprinkled in the Pacific Ocean by the U.S. Navy in San Diego per his wishes. Simple Cremations & Burials, in Clinton, assisted with arrangements.
