TERRE HAUTE —
Winfield Scott Haldt, age 91, a longtime Terre Haute resident and retired insurance agent, passed away peacefully in Cincinnati on Sunday, June 3, 2012. He was born April 13, 1921, at Cannons Crossing, Del., to Winfield and Adah J. (Snedeker) Haldt.
Winfield was a World War II veteran who flew in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in 1945 with the 13th Army Air Force, 307 Bomb Group (heavy) 370th Bombardment Squadron in the B-24 Liberator, a ball/tail gunner. He was the last of his 10-man crew to take the final flight. He loved and supported our military and veterans his whole life; a life member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, DAV, and joined AMVETS in 2007. He was a past president of the Life Underwriters Association, a former member of the Elks BPOE of Terre Haute, a charter member of the Optimist International of Brazil, and a Boy Scout Master.
He is survived by his children, Rebecca Rajhansa, Carolyn (Richard) Johnson, Carl (Glynda Norwood), Charles (Jonnie Rockwood), Leslie (Violet), James, M’Lissa, and Barbara Haldt; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four nephews Timothy, David, Allen, and Paul Roads.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Adah V. (Haldt) Roads; son, William Haldt; son-in-law, Avi Rajhansa; his first wife and mother of his children, Frances Schmidt Haldt; and former wife, Helen Sampson.
At his request, his remains were cremated and a memorial service will be at a later date. His remains will be interned at Roselawn Cemetery in Terre Haute.
