Alverna M. (Gustin) Hooker

TERRE HAUTE — Alverna M. (Gustin) Hooker, 91, of Terre Haute, passed away in her residence on Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, surrounded by her family. She was born Sept. 21, 1920, in Terre Haute, to John and Cora Gustin. Alverna worked at Miller-Parrott Baking Co. from 1941 to 1948, packing army rations during World War II, United States Baking Co. in Seelyville, from 1959 to 1969, and then Chesty Foods in 1970, where she worked for 12 years before retiring in 1982.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and loved to cook and enjoyed family gatherings. On Aug. 19, 1991, she gave her heart to Jesus. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Vicksburg, and attended Faithway Bible Church in Worthington.

Alverna is survived by four children, Karen and Linda Hooker, both of Terre Haute, William (Bill) Hooker Jr. and wife Melissa of Linton, Debbie Grayless and husband Ed of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Tiffany Trout and husband Tommy of Terre Haute, William Hooker III of Linton, Megan Grayless of Terre Haute, and Kimberly Birchman and husband Mike of Coatsville; four great-grandchildren, Dylan Trout and Allison, Mikey and Ethan Birchman, all of Terre Haute; one niece, Jan Gillis and husband Chuck of Terre Haute; one great-niece, Mitzi Cook and husband Dan of Terre Haute; and one great-nephew, Chad Gillis of Shelbyville. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Gene) Hooker Sr., whom she married May 17, 1947, and they were together 49 years before his death in 1996. Also her parents, and one sister, Helen Hooker, preceded her.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive. Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Terry Dowell officiating. Burial will follow at Durham Cemetery. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Southern Care Hospice, Intrepid Home Health Care and Dr. Gary Fitzgerald for all their support and excellent care.
