Louis Roger Williams, 86, formerly of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Charleston, South Carolina, surrounded by family Aug. 4, 2012. Hailing from Mansfield, Ohio, he received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Bowling Green University in 1951 and his Master of Arts from Ohio State University in 1955. He also was very proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1944 and 1945. He had a long teaching career that took him from New York to Nebraska and finally to Indiana State University, where he was an Associate Professor of Art (Emeritus) until his retirement in 1988.
Louis was a prolific and versatile contemporary artist, working in several different mediums including sculpture, drawing, graphic design and photography. His work was featured in exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in New York City, the Sheldon Swope Art Gallery of Terre Haute, Sotheby’s in Chicago, and had showings in Nebraska, Kansas, Ohio, West Virginia, and internationally in Brazil and Israel. Several of his works are part of the permanent collection at Indiana State University, and he was considered a “patriarch” of the Terre Haute art world. Louis enjoyed jazz, classical music, tennis, travel, computers and technology, and the German language. He was a member of the Elks Lodge of Terre Haute and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.
Louis had a great love of family and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette; and his daughter, Ann. He is survived by his brother, Charles Williams; his daughters, Beth Pinkston and her husband William and Jane Smith and her husband Jeff; as well as his granddaughters, Melissa Hopper and her husband Larry, Alison Fell and her husband Derek, Stacey Holderbach, Amanda Martin, and Abbie Martin; his grandsons, Eli Wright and his wife Natalie and Len Snell and his wife Kim; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Williams will be laid to rest next to his wife and daughter at Farmersburg Westlawn Cemetery. The family is honoring his request to have no public ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Hospice in Louis R. Williams’ name. Condolences may be received online at: www.debaunfuneralhomes.com.
