Betty Rose Beauchamp Gurchiek, 95, died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at her home in Terre Haute. She was born to Dee and Verna Grover Beauchamp on Dec. 3, 1916, in Vincennes, the oldest of four children. She was a 1934 graduate of Blackhawk High School, wife of 47 years to Michael V. Gurchiek, mother of four children, grandmother to 11 children and great-grandmother to 16 children. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and lived for many years in the home she helped to build on Edgebrook Avenue.
For many years she was an active member of the Women's Guild at her parish. She belonged to the National Council of Catholic Women, the Women's Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus and the Wabash Senior Activity Center. She loved country music, dancing and traveling. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed working crossword puzzles and the Jumble. She was an avid gardener; plants, flowers and trees of all kinds brought her great joy. She was renowned in her family for the lip-smacking homemade noodles that she made for special occasions, using a recipe passed down by her maternal grandmother.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy Mullican; son, Mike and daughter-in-law Barbara Wrin Gurchiek; daughter, Kathy Gurchiek and son-in-law Jim Halley; son, Richard Gurchiek; brother-in-law, George Gurchiek; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; younger sister, Ruth Tilley; brothers, John “Jack” and Gerald “Gade” Beauchamp; and son-in-law, James Mullican.
Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with a rosary at 7 p.m. There also will be visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, followed by Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m., with Friar Mark Weaver officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Flowers are welcome but memorial contributions may be made to St. Ann Community Outreach Services of Terre Haute, 1440 Locust St., 47807; or Hospice of the Wabash Valley, 400 Eighth St., Terre Haute, 47804.
