TERRE HAUTE —
Maxine Ruth Weaver Kesler, age 89, died on the 14th day of August 2012. She was a registered nurse, a graduate of St. Anthony’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1944, following which she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and following basic training, she shipped out of New Orleans on the hospital ship Thistle Republic bound for the Asiatic South Pacific Theater of War. She served at the U.S. Army base hospital at Clark Field in Manila, Philippine Islands, where her patients were not only U.S. Army wounded service men, but also Filipino guerrilla and Japanese prisoners of war. She was later transferred to Biak Island to close down the Army hospital there and prepare the wounded soldiers for transfer back to the U.S. at the close of the war. She was discharged at Camp Beale, Calif., with the rank of first lieutenant and awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Victory Medal, Philippine Independence Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. After the war, she was office nurse for Dr. Ivan Gilbert whose office was in the Rose Dispensary Building at 7th and Cherry, during which time she renewed her acquaintance with John A. Kesler, who was her classmate at Marshall High School. The two were married in 1948 in Methodist Temple at 7th and Poplar, in Terre Haute, where she has remained a member for 64 years. All three of their children have been baptized at United Methodist Temple, as well as some of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Kesler was born in rural Clark County, Ill., on March 20, 1923. Her parents were Russell Weaver and Margaret Smith Weaver. She is survived by her daughter, Nicki Lynn Herrington of Clayton, Mo.; her son, Bradley W. Kesler and wife Deb of West Terre Haute, and her son, John A. Kesler II and wife Diane of West Terre Haute; her sister, Dorothy Quinn of Springfield, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Benjamin Herrington, Ann Herrington, Dennis Kesler, Bradley Kesler II, Jaime Steurer, Katelyn Kesler, John A. Kesler III, Ashley B. Luken, Madison T. Kesler; and seven great-grandchildren.
Her husband, John A. Kesler; parents; and one brother, Eugene Weaver preceded her in death.
She was a member and past president of St. Anthony Hospital Nurse Alumni Association, the Florence Nightingale Club, Kerman Grotto Cauldron, South Camp of Gideons Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and the Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Eastern Star, and Princess of the Daughters of the Nile Badoura Temple No. 23. Her last 25 years before retirement was as a nurse at the Student Health Center at ISU which she enjoyed very much, working with her nurse friends and fellow St. Anthony nurse classmates. Following retirement she volunteered her nursing services at St. Ann Free Clinic. She loved bowling, working in her flower garden and lawn and played in the same bridge group for 60 years.
Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. 3rd St., in West Terre Haute, with the Revs. Steve Cain officiating and Dennis Leek, rendering the eulogy. Burial will be in Livingston (Ill.) Cemetery with military graveside rites by a combined honor guard. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Saturday. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to United Methodist Temple, 5301 S. U.S. Hwy. 41, Terre Haute, IN. Serving as pallbearers will be her four grandsons, Dennis Kesler, Bradley W. Kesler II, John A. Kesler III, Benjamin Herrington, and her two sons, Bradley W. Kesler and John A. Kesler II.
