Bobby Lawson

TERRE HAUTE — It is with great regret that we announce the passing of Bobby Lawson at 5:20 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013. He took his last breath and transitioned into the after life. Born the second youngest of nine children (four brothers and four sisters) to the parentage of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard and Lena Mae Lawson.

He is preceded in death by four sisters, Estella Mills, Mary Lawson, Mildred Baker, and Barbara Lawson; two brothers, Leroy Lawson and Lewis Warren Lawson.

Bobby is survived by two devoted brothers and four sisters-in-law, Richard Lawson Jr. (LaVerne Lawson) of Terre Haute, Marian Eugene Lawson (Willet Lawson) of Tempo Texas, Marie Lawson of Greencastle, and Rosa Lawson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and a host of nieces, nephews, church family, and friends.

Bobby attended Booker T. Washington, Sarah Scott Junior High School and was a graduate of Gerstmeyer High School in Terre Haute 1961 and went on to attend Indiana State University for two years, However, it was at Gerstmeyer that he lettered as a four-sport athlete (football, baseball, basketball and track). He loved sports — especially fast pitch softball.

Bobby was drafted into the United States Army to serve his country in the Vietnam War in 1966, Bobby then became a deputy sheriff for 51⁄2 years. Bobby was employed at Federal Prison in Terre Haute for 25 years. (July 1972 — retired Jan. 4, 1998).

Bobby was a devoted member of Second Missionary Baptist Church for over 32 years. He was president of the Usher Board for 25 years and an active member of the Men’s Club.

The impact that this gentleman had on both his family, church family and community will be felt for some time to come. We can only pray that others will follow his example.

Bobby was a very quiet man and he loved people, he was well known of his kisses for everyone.

Calling will be Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, from 4 until 8 p.m. at Second Missionary Baptist Church. Interment is in Grandview Cemetery. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Russell Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
