ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS — Sister Anne Doherty, 84, died at 11:17 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born in Indianapolis, on May 6, 1928, to Patrick and Hannah Byrne Doherty, and was baptized Teresa Anne.

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Jan. 9, 1946, and received the name Sister Dennis. She professed final vows Aug. 15, 1953. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, a master’s degree in psychology and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, both from Catholic University of America. Of her 67 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered in education for 16 years in elementary schools in Indiana and Illinois. Having completed her graduate studies, she was a faculty member at SMWC from 1969 to 1972, Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass., from 1979 to 1981, and Martin University, 1994 to 1995. She served as staff psychologist at Vigo County Guidance Clinic from 1969 to 1972 and director of Clinical Services at Katherine Hamilton Center from 1972 to 1979. In 1981 she was elected general superior of the Congregation, an office she held for five years. She then served as an advocate and consultant for the dioceses of Monterey, Calif., and Gary, Ind. In 1996 she returned to the motherhouse and served as a clinical psychologist at Educational Family Services in West Terre Haute. She also served her sisters in a variety of ways, including being a driver. Beginning in 2006 she dedicated herself totally to the ministry of prayer.

Sister is survived by a sister, Eileen Munshower of Bozeman, Mont.; and a brother, James Doherty of Beech Grove. She is preceded in death by two brothers, Paul M. Doherty and John P. Doherty; and two sisters, Mary Jo Matthews and Sister Catherine Doherty, SP

The wake is on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial is Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence immediately after the Mass. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
