James (Jim) Marvin Herter, 78, of Terre Haute, passed away on Jan. 27, 2013. He was born in Clinton, on April 8, 1934, to Chester Herter and Edith Snedeker. The family moved to Terre Haute a few years later. He was a graduate of Gerstmeyer Technical High School, where he was an honor roll student and lettered in varsity cross-country and basketball. Jim was a member of the 1951 Gerstmeyer basketball team that won the first Wabash Valley Tournament. He continued his education at Indiana State University, earning Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees. While at ISU he was a member of the ISU freshman basketball team.
He was drafted in the U.S. Army and served in Augsburg, Germany, from 1956-1958.
Jim was married to Saundra Jean Morrison on May 11, 1957; they were married for 56 years.
He taught industrial arts and coached basketball and cross-country starting his teaching and coaching career at North Miami High School in Denver, Ind., followed by North Liberty High School in North Liberty, before relocating to Bradenton/Sarasota, Fla., where he retired from the Sarasota School System in 1995. He enjoyed golfing, traveling and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Saundra, and their children, Jami Herter of Sarasota, James (Linda) Herter of Cassopolis, Mich., and Timothy Herter of Centre, Ala.; a sister, Patricia Campbell of North Manchester; nine grand children, six great-grandchildren, two nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by Patricia’s husband Esmond, sister, Rita and brother-in-law Tye Bensley, sister Janet and brother-in-law Amos Smith, nephew Jimmy Rogers and nephew Craig Bensley.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to VNA Hospice of the Wabash Valley or St. Ann’s Clinic, Terre Haute. The family of James Marvin Herter wishes to thank everyone for your prayers and condolences.
The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday Jan. 31, 2013, at St. Benedict Parish, 111 S. Ninth St. Friar John Bamman will be officiating. His grandsons will be pallbearers for his services.
