James H. ‘Big Jim’ Kerr

TERRE HAUTE — Jesus said, “Come unto Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

James H. “Big Jim” Kerr, 86, of Terre Haute, was called home to that rest on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013.

Jim was born Nov. 23, 1926, in Terre Haute, to Jesse Harold and Dorothy Shipman Kerr.

Jim was retired from IBEW Local 725 and had enjoyed many years with the Retirees Club, serving as president for several of those years. He was active at both Cross Lane Community Church and Northside Christian Church. He was a United States Army veteran and was a Masonic Lodge Humbolt #42 member for 50 years.

Jim was welcomed into heaven by his parents; his beloved wife, Ruth Lawson Kerr; Ruth’s daughter, Nancy Jackson, and many extended family members.

Those who remain to treasure his memory include his daughter, Jaimie Kerr Ellis and her husband, John; beloved grandson, Jonathan James Ellis, to whom Jim was “Big Grandpa”; daughter, Mary Ann Heck and her husband, Loyd; Nancy’s husband, Dick Jackson; grandchildren, Jeff Heck, Sally Day and Jay Jackson and their families; sister, Betty Lidster; brothers, Robert Kerr and Harry Kerr and their families; uncle John D. Shipman, who loved to call Jim “Short Round” and his family. Jim’s warm smile and positive attitude have brightened many lives.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at Rosedale Cemetery, with Pastor Brett Wilson officiating. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., followed by a brief service, on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at Cross Lane Community Church, 2204 Lafayette Ave. Humbolt Lodge #42 will be conducting Masonic services at 4 p.m. at the church.
