James Culver White

James Culver White, humble, loving husband, father and grandfather died at home on January 17, 2013. Jim was born on July 26, 1923 in Kankakee IL and grew up in Evansville, IN. He was a member of Bethany Christian Church in Evansville in his youth, and more recently, a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Terre Haute. Jim was an Eagle Scout and later a Scoutmaster for his son, Dan.

On September 14, 1946 Jim married the love of his life, G. Victoria Riney of Owensboro, KY. Theirs is a 70 year long love affair! Jim served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS Cowpens in Japan as a photographer’s mate. It is likely you have seen his pictures in WWII documentaries. From then on photography became a lifelong interest and hobby.

Jim worked as a tool and die maker, then as a pioneer and inventor in the plastics industry, working in Evansville, IN, Louisville, KY, Bay City, MI, Wilmington, MA, Beaverton, MI, Gloucester, MA, Terre Haute, IN and Mt. Vernon, IN. He was instrumental in the development of several plastic designs and is the holder of two United States patents. He started Feedstock Inc., a plastics recycling business, in Mt. Vernon, IN of which he was President & CEO.

Jim loved to take things apart just to see how they worked. He was an avid reader who frequented the local library, and a history buff who spent many an afternoon in old cemeteries and stopped to read every historic marker along the many miles he traveled around the USA and the world. His exuberance, insatiable intellectual curiosity and optimism inspired us.

Jim is survived by his wife of 67 years, G. Victoria (Riney) White; a brother, Alan F. and wife, Pat White of Kameula, HI; daughters, Patricia Ann (David) Clendennin of  Utica, MI, Sharon Louise (Bernard) White-Wheeler of Anchorage, AK, and Susan Lynn (Gregory) Aldrich of Terre Haute, IN; son, David Alan White of Magnolia, TX; and daughter-in-law, Paula Anne White (Norman Young) of Portage, MI. Also surviving are grandchildren: Jeff Thomas (Amy R.) White of Shawnee, KS, Amy Marie White of Chicago, IL, Ryan James Clendennin of Utica, MI, Christopher David (Cristiane) Clendennin of Boulder, CO, and Leah Elizabeth Aldrich (Khanrad) Wilson of Terre Haute, IN; great- grandchildren; Adam Daniel and Celeste Michelle White of Shawnee, KS and Kellan James Wilson of Terre Haute, IN; and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Nota (Culver) and Hubert White;  his sisters, Nina Betty LeVeque and Marion ‘Mimi’ Cantwell; and by his son, Daniel James White.

A Memorial Mass is scheduled for 10:00 A.M., Thursday, January 24, 2013 in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1807 Poplar Street, Terre Haute, IN 47803, with Father Rick Ginther officiating. Private burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery. There is no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. Memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity, The Civil War Preservation Trust, Friends of the Terre Haute Library or to the American Cancer Society.
