MARTINSVILLE, Ill. —
James Orville Patchett, 84, of Fishers, Ind., and formerly of Martinsville, Ill., passed away at 8:03 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at St. Vincent’s Hospice, in Indianapolis. He was born Oct. 28, 1928, in Martinsville, the son of Jonathan Orville Patchett and Ruth Myrtle Claypool Patchett. On Sept. 4, 1954, he married Shirley Alice Walker, in the Martinsville Bible Church. They spent their lives together in Pendleton, Ind., Mooresville, Ind., and Lakeland, Fla.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Shirley Patchett of Fishers; sons, Jeffrey Patchett and wife Meg of Kannapolis, N.C., and Gregory Patchett and wife Debbie of Carmel, Ind.; grandsons, Ryan (Kayla) Patchett, Jason (Katy) Patchett, and Robert “Rob” (Jenny) Patchett; granddaughters, Jessica Patchett and Lauren Patchett; sister, Dorothy Sandberg of Seattle, Wash.; sister-in-law, Jane Patchett of Normal; nieces and nephews, Melanie Rinkenberger Baker, Phyllis Patchett Kemp, Jim Rinkenberger, Janell Rinkenberger Kloter, William Allyn, William Patchett II and Valeria Allyn Bearce.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Patchett; sisters, Wilma Gene Allyn, Elanor Burge and Nadine Rinkenberger; and a niece, Cheryl Greeson Apperson.
Mr. Patchett was a U.S. Army veteran during 1950-1952. He played trumpet in the 43rd Infantry Division Band, where a year of his service was spent in Germany, and he was proud to say he played for Gen. Eisenhower and Lord Mountbatten. Jim graduated from Martinsville High School in 1946, and then graduated from Indiana State University with a bachelor’s degree in education, and a master’s degree in administration from Indiana University. Jim started as band director in Pendleton Schools for six years and then Mooresville Consolidated Schools for 32 years, where he was high school band director, high school assistant principal, and junior high principal. He was a member of Griffin Baptist Church, in Lakeland, Fla.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. CST Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Greenwell Funeral Home, 30 N. Washington St., with Brother Billie Ray Ulrey officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgelawn Cemetery.
