TERRE HAUTE —
Barbara Jean Lewis, of Terre Haute, our devoted and loving wife, mother, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully in the early morning of Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at Royal Oaks Health Care & Rehabilitation Center, at the age of 61, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Barb was born Aug. 10, 1951, in Terre Haute, to the late Daniel and Josephine (Dooley) Bell. She was a 1969 graduate of Garfield High School. Barb met the love of her life, Stephen Lewis, when she was in the ninth grade. They were united in marriage on Nov. 11, 1972, at the Eighth Avenue Baptist Church. Together they shared more than 40 years and countless memories.
Barb retired this past June from the Vigo County School Corporation, where she worked at Deming Elementary, managing the cafeteria for 28 years. Her strong work ethic, matched with her generosity to the less fortunate will not soon be forgotten.
Barb’s family, especially her grandbabies, were the light of her life. She loved spending time and being around those she loved. She also enjoyed boating and camping on Sullivan Lake and Raccoon Lake. She was a past worthy matron of the Pimento Chapter 516, Order of the Eastern Star. Barb’s private, honest and loving nature will live on for generations to come in the hearts of those she touched.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband, Stephen Lewis of Terre Haute and son, Matthew Lewis of Terre Haute. She was the adoring and proud grandma of Gage Lewis, Daniel Lewis and Natalie Lewis. Also surviving are Barb’s brothers, Daniel Bell of Terre Haute, and Richard and wife Mary Bell of West Terre Haute; brothers-in-law, John Lewis of Terre Haute, and James P. and wife Nancy Lewis of Shelburn; sister-in-law, Nancy and husband John Hay of Terre Haute; along with countless nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents, Barb was welcomed home to heaven by her father and mother-in-law, James and Naomi Lewis; along with her brother-in-law, Chris Lewis.
Visitation will be on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, from 11 a.m. until Barb’s Funeral Ceremony at 1 p.m., at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, 4660 Lafayette St. Pastor Craig Wininger will officiate, with cremation to follow. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family online at:
