TERRE HAUTE — Frances G. Rankin, a resident of Santa Fe, N.M., passed away on April 20, 2012. She was born on July 27, 1921, in Linwood, Kan., to Edward S. Goodnough and Frances A. Goodnough, and married Alan C. Rankin on Oct. 17, 1958.

Mrs. Rankin received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education at Fort Hays Kansas State College and taught the 4th grade at Washington School in Hays, Kan. In 1958, she moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., to be wife and hostess to Alan C. Rankin, then a Vice Chancellor at the University of Pittsburgh. She became First Lady at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind., when Dr. Rankin was inaugurated President in 1965. Mrs. Rankin had an opera-quality mezzo-soprano voice and was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity. She was an actress and singer in Terre Haute Community theatre productions throughout the ’60s and ’70s. She participated in many local university and community organizations in Hays, Pittsburgh, and Terre Haute.

Mrs. Rankin is survived by her daughter, Lynn R. Kelly of Santa Fe; her sister and brother-in-law, Jo and Eli Yakich of Salida, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial will take place in Hays in May and a memorial service will be in Terre Haute at a date to be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to Indiana State University Foundation, Alan C. and Frances G. Scholarship Fund, 30 N. 5th St., Terre Haute, IN 47809.
