TERRE HAUTE — Charles L. Gehring, 80, of Terre Haute, passed away on Friday, June 1, 2012, at his residence. He was born on Dec. 16, 1931, in Terre Haute, to Lewis and Margaret (Britton) Gehring. He married Bernice Freers on May 18, 1952.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from January 1951 until November 1953. Charles worked as a Professor of Life Sciences at Indiana State University and was a trusted counselor to many students. He was involved in youth baseball and was the coach of the 1969 Babe Ruth League State Champions. He enjoyed working with his hands and was proud of the cabin he built with his father at Rocky Fork Lake. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and the occasional trip to the casino. He was a member of American Legion Post 104.

Charles leaves behind to cherish his memory his son, Randy L. Gehring and his wife Nancy of West Lafayette; his daughter, Dawn I. Gehring of Terre Haute; grandsons, Tyler and Trent Gehring of West Lafayette; a sister, Anita S. Martin and her husband Charles (Bo) of Terre Haute; nieces, Donna Williams and Kelli Martin; a nephew, Chris Gehring and his wife Kelly; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Gehring.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; parents; and a brother, Donald Gehring.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 8, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St. A memorial service will follow visitation at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date at Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley.
