Dorothy Ray Andrews Tipton

TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy Ray Andrews Tipton passed away on May 15, 2012, in Bloomington, Ind. Mrs. Tipton was born in 1925, in Indianapolis, to Frederick B. Ray and Eleanor Perry Ray. She graduated from Indiana University and received her master’s degree from Indiana State University. She was a Child Welfare Worker in Vigo County and later taught in Rankin, Collett, and Ouabache elementary schools in Terre Haute. In 1988 she embarked on a teaching mission in Sierra Leone with her husband, John Tipton. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Terre Haute, First United Methodist Church, in Bloomington, and Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church in Naples, Fla. She also was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, Indiana Retired Teachers, and local weavers’ guilds. Mom would not have thought of herself as an artist, but she was skilled with an eight harness loom. Her intricate weaving was prized by all who received samples. Her birthday cake creations are fondly remembered after more than 50 years. Her greatest artwork was with the medium of the human mind as a teacher. She taught in classrooms in Terre Haute and Sierra Leone. As a widow, she taught her three teenage children to be responsible citizens. She hosted grandchildren and stepgrandchildren at her house on the lake near Center Point. She taught them how to swim, row a boat, play card games, and get along with their siblings. More recently, she taught the 6 year old god daughter of her grandson how to sound out difficult words like “Terre Haute” (difficult if you are not from Indiana). There were times when she quietly accommodated the wishes of others. She followed her husbands and sons to many baseball games. Without realizing it, she visited all the National League baseball teams in the 1960s. When the issue was important, she would stand up for her beliefs. When a teacher’s association sponsored a “blue flu” day, she refused to call in sick, but she also refused to work and lost a day’s pay. Her gentle strength will be missed by many family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, James P. Andrews of Terre Haute, in 1965; John W. Tipton of Terre Haute, in 1993; and her brother, Frederick Perry Ray of Indianapolis, in 1996.

She is survived by her daughter, Anna Louise Andrews and her husband Mark Johnson of Anchorage, Alaska; her son, Ronald R. Andrews and his wife Jane Andrews of Rochester, N.Y., and her son, Dale R. Andrews and his wife Sharon Andrews of Bloomington; her stepchildren, David Tipton and his wife Rita Tipton of Gadsden, Ala., Mary Jane Adams of Elwood, Ind., Paul Tipton and his wife Irene Tipton of Goodyear, Ariz., and Beth Moffet and husband Mike Moffett of St. Cloud, Minn; her sisters, Eleanor Hammer of San Francisco, Marjorie Schwier of Minneapolis, and Alice Ell of Oxford, Conn.; her grandchildren, James Andrews, Scott Andrews, Andrew Johnson, Joseph Andrews, and Brita Johnson; her stepgrandchildren, Jason Vincz, Michelle Pierce, Cheryl Ervin, Gregory Mengelt, Michael Mengelt, John Mengelt, Emily Dean, Benjamin Tipton, Amanda Moffett, and Timothy Moffett.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on June 14, 2012, at Centenary United Methodist Church in Terre Haute. Donations in lieu of flowers should be sent to Operation Classroom (http://www.gbgm-umc.org/operationclassroom/index.html).

The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard in Bloomington is handling the arrangements. Online condolences may be made to the family at: www.pdcfuneralchapel.com
