Helen M. Matherly, 98, of Terre Haute died Wednesday morning, May 23, 2012 in Meadows Manor East. She was born July 2, 1913 in West Terre Haute, IN to William Chapman and Sarah Elizabeth Myers Chapman. Her husband, Weedon Matherly, preceded her in death in 2002.
Survivors include her son, Dennis Matherly and his wife, Donna, of Springfield, IL; her daughter, Susan Malenka of Grand Rapids, MI; four grandchildren, Sara Beth Matherly and Lucas Matherly of Springfield, IL and Steven Malenka and Michael Malenka of Grand Rapids, MI; three great-grandchildren, Arianna, Damian and Anezka; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by four brothers; and two sisters.
Helen was a very active member of World Gospel Church. She loved children her entire life and throughout the years has done much for individual children she has known through family, friends and neighbors. She also, for many years, provided transportation for children to attend activities at World Gospel Church and helped in the nursery during services. As long as she was able, Helen happily was involved in childcare even long after her own two children were grown. Understandably, she was a devoted mother and grandmother.
Second to her love of children would be Helen’s love of animals and she doted on the cats and dogs she shared her life with over the years. Helen loved beauty and enjoyed the flowers and plants in her yard, greatly appreciating those who enabled her to still have her beautiful plants, when caring for her yard and garden became more of a challenge.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 26, 2012 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Reverend Alfy Austin officiating. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 5:00-7:00 P.M. in the funeral home.
