TERRE HAUTE — Sister Maureen Clare Lehmann, 96, died at 1:15 p.m. on Aug. 11, 2012, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Sister was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Chelsea, Mass., to John J. and Mabel White Lehmann and baptized Agnes Eleanor.

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 10, 1936, professed final vows on Aug. 15, 1944. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Latin from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, a master’s degree in Latin from Marquette University and a master’s degree in Theology from Boston College. In her 76 years as a Sister of Providence, Sister ministered as a teacher for 47 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. She then moved to her home parish of St. Rose in Chelsea, where she ministered for a number of years. In 1993 she retired and moved to the Motherhouse where she gave nine years of secretarial service in various offices there. In 2002, she totally dedicated herself to the ministry of prayer.

Sister is survived by a sister, Mabel Moschella of Revere, Mass. She is preceded in death by a sister, Rita Marie Lehmann; a brother, John Joseph Lehmann; and her aunts, Sister Rita Marie Lehmann, S.P., and Sister Marie Vincent Lehmann, S.P.

The wake is Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial is Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at 11 a.m., in the church, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
