TERRE HAUTE —
Leona Margaret (Barron) Kaperak, 97, formerly of Terre Haute, and residing in Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully to the Lord on Friday morning, November 9, 2012. Leona was born December 17, 1914, in Old Jacksonville, Indiana to Mary (Budveselziackok) and Michael Barron. Living her early childhood in Clinton, Indiana, Leona graduated from Garfield High School in 1934. She was united in marriage to Paul John Kaperak in Salina, Kansas on July 25, 1943.
Leona worked at Miller Parrot Baking Company and Indiana Bell Telephone Company during World War II. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Electrical Workers Local Union No. 725. As a lifelong member of St. Anns Catholic Parish and active member of the Wabash Senior Citizens Center, she volunteered numerous hours of her time and talents. She enjoyed music, dancing, singing, laughter, and baking pies and cinnamon rolls for her family.
Leona is survived by her two loving daughters, Paula and Patty and their spouses Mike (Paula) Slinger, and Tim (Patty) Talen; 4 grandchildren and spouses, Brigid Slinger Bowers (Michael), Andrew Talen, Luke Talen (Lisa), and Jenny Talen. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Eleanor Kaperak of Terre Haute, and numerous nieces and nephews. Leona was preceded in death by her husband Paul, grandson Peter Talen, her parents and five brothers and two sisters.
Friends and family may call at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 7243 East 10th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2012. Mass celebrating Leona’s life will follow at 10:00 a.m. Lunch will be served at the Parish Hall immediately following the service. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana with graveside rites at 2:30 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale Place at Fall Creek for their loving care and concern for Leona these past 2 1/2 years, becoming family to her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Rock Steady Boxing (for Parkinsons), The Peter Talen Arts Endowment Fund or Peter Talen Memorial Scholarship, or a charity of your choice to make a difference in Leona’s name.
