Clay City —
Russel M. Wolfe, 94, of Clay City, passed away at Regional Hospital, June 3, 2012, following a brief illness.
He was born in Clay County, Ind. March 3, 1918, the son of Benjamin and Ella (Foxworthy) Wolfe. Russel graduated from Clay City High School. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a medical technician. He married Ruth Ella Long April 24, 1945. She preceded him in death in 1983. Russel worked for Peabody Coal Company, retiring in 1983.
For several years Russel attended church at Beech Church. Later in life he was instrumental in building Friendly Open Bible Church and served with Youth for Christ for many years. Gideon’s International has been a passion of Russel’s for several years. Recently, along with Dr. Fred Froderman and Rodger Hoffman, Russel had ministered to the inmates at the Clay County Justice Center. Russel enjoyed music and led singing in his church. He loved to serve the Lord in any capacity he was called to work.
Russel was also a member of the Clay City American Legion 1127, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6606, served as a Trustee of the Beech Cemetery Association and sang with the Miner’s Quartet in many churches.
He was preceded in death by his parents Benjamin and Ella Wolfe; wife Ruth Wolfe; as well as nine siblings.
Russel leaves behind two daughters: Sylvia Kirchner and husband Gene and Rebecca Lewis and husband Richard “Rick” both of Clay City; grandchildren: Julie Kassis (Alan), Gena Pulley (Chad), Jill Harms (Russell), Derrick and Troy Lewis; great-grandchildren: Zachrey Watkins, Abraham Kassis, William and Owen Harms, and Mia Pulley; brother, Clarence Wolfe; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Services will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, in Clay City, Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Brad West and Dr. Fred Froderman officiating. Burial will follow at Beech Cemetery.
