Minnie L. Switzer

CAYUGA — Minnie L. Switzer, 87, of Cayuga, passed away at 10:05 a.m. EDT Friday, June 29, 2012, at The Waters of Covington in Covington. She was born April 8, 1925, in Cayuga, the daughter of the late William and Helen Swaim Ottinger. She married John Thomas Whittington in December 1942, and he preceded her in death in 1948. She later married Buck Switzer in 1953, and he preceded her in death in 1980. She married Frank Switzer Jr. on Feb. 24, 1990, in Lodi, and he preceded her in death Jan. 18, 2008.

Survivors include one son, Bill Whittington of Hillsboro; one daughter, Becky (Brent) Shaw of Cayuga; one stepson, Russell E. (Barbara) Switzer of Cayuga; four grandchildren, Erica Sams, Karla Smith, Brandi Hughes, and Mike Cedar; four stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren, Jacob Sams, Krysta Wilson, JonMichael Sams, Shelby Gulley, and Owen Norman; three stepgreat-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jean Switzer of Cayuga; and one niece and four nephews.

Minnie also was preceded in death by her son, Donnie Whittington; two granddaughters, Kayla Hughes and Karissa Shirar; two sisters, Ruth Laycock and Edith Sullivan; and two brothers, Archie and Warren Ottinger.

Minnie was a homemaker. She formerly worked at the Florsheim Shoe Factory in Danville, Ill., and Lilly Tulip Cup Factory in Cayuga. She was a lifetime member of the Cayuga American Legion Unit 263, formerly serving as president. She also held numerous other positions in the Auxiliary. Minnie enjoyed baking pies, working puzzles, collecting fenton baskets and going to auctions. She especially enjoyed her dog, Dharma.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. EDT Monday, July 2, 2012, at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, with the Rev. Steve Vitaniemi officiating, Burial is at Thomas Cemetery in Newport. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today, July 1, 2012, at the funeral home. Memorial services by Cayuga American Legion Auxiliary will be at 7:30 p.m. EDT.
