Jane Bauer Alexander died peacefully on July 7, 2012, surrounded by family, in the home of her daughter Elisabeth and son-in-law Richard Friedman. She was born in Indianapolis on October 4, 1918 to Frank Howard Bauer and Ruth Doherty Bauer. She graduated from Columbus High School in Columbus, Indiana and attended Indiana University where she met her husband of sixty-eight years, Marshall Alexander. They operated a dairy farm on Shrine Hill for many years. They had five daughters, four of whom survive: Elisabeth Friedman (and Richard), Kathy Levy (and Bob), Tina Hartig (and Jeff) and Diane Alexander. Jane’s daughter Virginia Lee Alexander preceded her in death. Her parents and sister, Virginia Lee Penland, also preceded her in death. Grandchildren also survive her: Alexa Bryan, Jennifer Hartig, Elliott Friedman, and Philip (and Brooke) Hartig. In addition, Jane has several surviving nieces, nephews, and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate Jane’s life is to be held at a later date. Arrangements are being made at Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Mental Health of America of Vigo County or the charity of choice.
