Dustin Kelly, 24, of Terre Haute, took flight on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, as a result of a senseless and devastating tragedy. He was born April 17, 1988, in Terre Haute, to Kathy Jo Kelly-Calloway and Bernard Brown.
He attended school in Bloomington, Ill., but in his heart he was and always will be a Vigo County kid. He was a tutor and mentor as a student in the Vigo County School Corp., where he enjoyed working with kids younger than himself in math and reading. He also was a part of a reading group at Woodrow Wilson, where they read to kindergarten students in surrounding elementary schools.
Dustin had many dreams for the future. He planned to get back on track and go back to college to pursue a career in business. Dustin loved playing basketball, working out as he always kept his eye on his true passion of playing professional football. He was playing semi-pro football with hopes of being a walk on for the Indianapolis Colts. He was very family oriented and was often heard saying “family first.” He kept a close circle of friends and was always seen with a smile on his face. He was a very giving young man, always putting others before himself and protecting all that he came in contact with. He was color blind, and loved all that he met regardless of who their real family was; they became his family. Dustin was well loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Dorothy Mae Walker and Anna H. Stewart Brown; stepfather, Michael “Mick” Calloway, and uncle, Philip W. Vinson.
He is survived by his parents; brothers, Zachary Foster, Brandon and Elias Brown; sisters, Lana Brown, Alaya Calloway and Brocklyn Parks; granddad, Wilosby “Red” Kelly; and a host of friends, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at Cross Tabernacle Church. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services Friday, at the church. Russell Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
