Harold W. “Rusty” Landes Jr. resident of Deming, New Mexico, and formerly of West Terre Haute passed away Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M., as a result of complications from multiple sclerosis.
Rusty was born May 8, 1944, in Springfield, Mass., to Harold W. “Red” Landes Sr. and Carmella Mary Secondo Landes, both of whom preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly J. Peterson Landes whom he married in 1965 in Hastings, Neb. He also is survived by his two daughters and their families: Angela K. Gifford and her husband, Leroy Gifford Jr. and their children, Anasthaysia, Loyal, and Trevor Gifford all of West Terre Haute and Carmen M. Johnson and her husband, Kevin Johnson, and their children, Josua and Kourtney Johnson all of Brazil, Ind. He is further survived by his sister, Sandra J. Burpo, and her husband, Cliff Burpo and their two children.
Following his service in the Air Force from 1962 until 1966, Rusty was a police officer in Red Cloud, Nebraska, until 1969. After moving back to Indiana, he became a journeyman electrician through the International Brotherhood Of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 725 in Terre Haute retiring in 1993 due to debilities brought on by multiple sclerosis. Rusty was an avid amateur (ham) radio operator under the call of KAOHPK and he was proud to have published an amateur radio magazine, VHF/UHF & Above that had subscribers in 48 states and 15 foreign countries. Rusty lived in Illinois and Indiana the majority of his life, moving to New Mexico in 1995. He always had a come-back to most remarks or a joke to tell. He was interested in the people he came in contact with and frequently asked where you were from, where you went to school, or if you knew so-and-so. His smile was worth a thousand words.
Per his wishes, Rusty was cremated and a memorial service was in New Mexico on Aug. 2, 2012. A casual celebration of his life will be Saturday Aug. 11, 2012, in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute. Friends and family are welcome to join Rusty’s family after 4 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home to reminisce, laugh, tell stories, and share various “Rustyisms” with the memorial service to begin at 6 p.m. The family kindly suggests that if friends so desire, that they would prefer, that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the National MS Society, Harold “Rusty” Landes Memorial Fund through your local chapter: MS Society, 3500 DePauw Blvd., Indianapolis, IN 46268, or online at www.national mssociety.org/donate; or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or online at www.stjude.org/donate.
