Nancy J. Smith Dunn

TERRE HAUTE — Nancy J. Smith Dunn, 74, of Indianapolis, formerly of Terre Haute, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012. at 5:35 a.m., at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born Feb. 20, 1938, in Hopkinsville, Ky., to Frank and Dovie (Johnson) Smith. Educated in the Vigo County Public School system, she was a 1955 graduate of the former Gerstmeyer High School. She graduated in 1973 from the former Indiana Business College. She was employed at Indiana State University from 1974– 2000 in the office of the president, in which she was the first black female to work in that office.

She was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), where she served as a former secretary for the Greater Terre Haute Branch. She was a former member of the Professional Secretaries International, and a former member of the Wabash Valley Optimist Club. She was a member of the House of Hope Worship Ministries in Indianapolis, and a former member of Rapture Temple Church in Terre Haute. She was preceded in death by her parents, and 13 siblings.

She is survived by three sons, Cardia Smith (Georgett) of Columbia, Tenn., Timothy Dunn, and Pastor Sylvester Dunn II (Philana) of Indianapolis; one sister, Stella Fairrow of Terre Haute; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; special friend of more than 30 years, John D. “Trinidad” Beckles of Indianapolis; four special sisters, Velnora Jordan, Barbara Wade-Hubert, Jerri Russell-Smith and Theressa Bynum, all of Terre Haute; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Services will be Friday at 12 noon at the Saints Home Church of God In Christ, 2210 N. 13th St., with Pastor Sylvester Dunn II officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m., at the church. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Williams and Bluitt Funeral Home, in Indianapolis.
