TERRE HAUTE —
Charles D. (Chick) LaFollette, 79, of Hurst, Texas, passed away Oct. 28, 2012. Chick was born Feb. 20, 1933, in New Market, Ind. He graduated from New Market High School in 1951, and enrolled in Indiana State University during the fall of 1951. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in August of 1952, during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged during the Fall of 1956. He re-enrolled in ISU and graduated in 1959. He was hired by the Vigo County School Corporation and assigned to Honey Creek High School, where he taught Science, Health, Physical Education and coached basketball for 12 years. Chick moved to Terre Haute North Vigo High School in 1971, for its first year. From 1971-1977 he taught Science, Health, Physical Education and Driver Education. He also was an assistant basketball coach under the late Howard Sharpe. In the fall of 1977, Chick became an assistant principal at North High School. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1997. He received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from the governor for his service to community and country.
In 2007, Chick left Indiana, his Good Old Boys Breakfast Club, many dear friends and extended family to move to Texas, where he enjoyed the closeness of his daughters, grandsons and the milder weather. Regarding his three years working with the Texas Rangers professional baseball team, Chick remarked: “After all those years of playing baseball in high school and the Air Force, I cannot believe I get paid to go to the Rangers Ballpark to work!”
Survivors include daughters, Jennifer Bigler (husband Ron), Elizabeth LaFollette and three grandsons Maxwell Bigler, Camden Bigler and Alexander LaFollette. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, who were all very dear to him.
Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave. Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Union Christian Church, located at 5350 E. Hulman Drive. Pastor Mark Grayless will be officiating. Burial will be in LaFollette Cemetery, near Parkersburg in Montgomery County, at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
